Research Assistant and other Related Projects

This area outlines research projects I've been involved with during the course of my program.

They are grouped by topics.

The Community of Inquiry Model

Technology in the school System

Research Methodology

Family Literacy

The Community of Inquiry Model
(Garrison, Anderson & Archer 2000)

Temporal Analysis of asynchronous discussions: A Content Analysis

Following is my involvement with this project:

  • I have done (with a coding partner) the coding for cognitive presence, social presence and teacher presence using the Community of Inquiry Model (Garrison, Anderson & Archer 2000), to help understand the interaction between social and cognitive presence over time.

This research project has been completed for Brad Johnson (PhD student, Graduate Division of Educational Research (GDER), University of Calgary)

Jan 2004 - March 2004

How a blended learning model can support an inquiry process: A Content Analysis

Following is my involvement with this project:

  • I have done (with a coding partner) the coding for cognitive presence, social presence and teacher presence using the Community of Inquiry Model (Garrison, Anderson & Archer 2000), to compare similarities and differences between the f2f and online sessions.

This research project has been completed for Norm Vaughan (PhD student, Graduate Division of Educational Research (GDER), University of Calgary)

Jan 2004 - March 2004

An investigation of learning strategies for higher levels of online learning: A Content Analysis

Following is my involvement with this project:

  • Co-Investigator for content analysis of asynchronous text based discussions
  • Content analysis of various online instructional methods for an online course. The actual methods that we analysed were:
    • nominal group technique
    • debate
    • brainstorming
    • invited guest
    • webquest/case study
    • self study.
  • Trained for transcript coding using the Community of Inquiry Model (Garrison, Anderson & Archer 2000).

This research project has been completed for Heather Kanuka, Associate Director and Assistant Professor at the Learning Commons , University of Calgary. [Heather Kanuka (2003) is currently an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at Athabasca University]

September 2003- December 2003

A presentation has followed this investigation:

Kanuka, H., Lépine, B., & Larkin, K. (2004). An investigation of learning strategies for higher levels of online learning. Paper presentation at the Canadian Society for Higher Education, May-June, 2004, Winnipeg, Canada.

Related Conference:

Lépine, B., & Larkin, K. (2004). Lessons Learned: Content Analysis of Asynchronous Text Based Discussion. Paper presented at the 'Best Practice in e-Learning Conference', August 2004.

Technology in the school System

À l'ère des nouveaux savoirs technopédagogiques : les écoles francophones et d'immersion française en Alberta - Projet APTIF

APTIF Project: In the new era of techno-pedagogical knowledge: Francophone and French immersion schools in Alberta

I have been involved in many aspects of this project:

  • Research assistant
  • Translation of the semi-structured interview questionnaire from French to English to send to Ethic.
  • Revision and refining of the questionnaire (in French) for the interviews.
  • Interviews with schools teachers and technology specialists.
  • Creation of a Microsoft Access database and entered the data.
  • Transcriptions of taped interviews.
  • Presentation at the WorldCall 2003 conference (May 7-10, 2003) [Les TIC au secondaire: défis et pratiques des enseignants des écoles de langue minoritaire et d'immersion en Alberta par Sylvie Roy, Brigitte Lépine et Martine Pellerin]

This research project has been completed for Sylvie Roy (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary)

The funding was provided by Imperial Oil Charitable Foundation.

May 2002-May 2003

A presentation has followed this investigation:

Roy, S., Lépine, B. and M. Pellerin. (2003). "Les TIC au secondaire: défis et pratiques des enseignants des écoles de langue minoritaire et d'immersion en Alberta", paper presented at the International conference called WorldCall, CALL from the margins, Banff, Alberta, May. [Abstract]

Related Research Paper: Overview of Technology Integration (Fall 2002)

Research Methodology

Multidisciplinary Research Methodology

Following are the sections I have been involved with:

  • I built a database using ACCESS. I entered the information collected across campus by another student. This information was to be used to determine the requirements for a multi-disciplinary research methods course to be built in WebCT and piloted in the fall 2000 semester.
  • I did online research and then built this website which is a collection of online resources related to research method and research design.

This research project has been completed for Michele Jacobsen (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary) and Rob Kremer (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Computer Science, University of Calgary).

The funding was provided by the LEE --the Alberta Learning Enhancement Envelope.

June - December 2000

Related Research Paper: Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods (Fall 2000)

Family Literacy

Bibliographie sur l'alphabétisation familiale
Bibliography Family Literacy

Following is my involvement with this project:

  • Online research of French articles for Family Literacy.
  • Organization of the resources into a document (see Le rapport final sur la recension des écrits en français)

This research project has been completed for Sylvie Roy (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary) and Margo Fauchon (Directrice du développement Fédération canadienne pour l'alphabétisation en français -FCAF)

December 2003
